Do The Work

DO THE WORK.

Years ago, one of my mentors, whom I paid to coach me, gave me a practice to do. I asked him if he had some form of accountability to help me follow through? You know, make sure I do it?

He frowned. "Absolutely NOT. You pay me to give you a path from where you are to where you want to go. You have to walk it. I'm not your motivator."

I was a bit stunned. That was NOT what I expected (smile).

"So how do you know if I did the work?" I asked.

"I'll know. But I'm not going to say anything. You're paying me. Do the work or don't."

That session cost me $250. I don't even remember what the practice he gave me was. But I remember that lesson.

It was all up to me.

I'm responsible. No one is coming to save me.

And it still is.

My coach was elite at helping me discover where I actually was in my life, getting clarity on where I wanted to go, and seeing unique pathways to get there. I thought THAT was what I was paying him for. But perhaps the greatest thing he taught me was that I was responsible for walking the path.

I've often talked about the difference between being a consumer and being a creator. And that's the number one distinction right there. Did you do the work? Information is cheap. And while there are ELITE coaches out there, people who are light years ahead of others in their discernment, insight, and knowledge of pathways, none of that matters if you don't do the work.

After more than 15 years of coaching people, I've learned something. I can usually tell when someone has done the work. And I can tell when someone hasn't. My job is to help people discover where they are, where they want to go, and how they might get there. That's a gift I have to offer the world.

But walking the path? That's yours.

You can complain. You can blame. You can accuse. You can spend your entire life explaining why someone else is responsible for where you are, hidden behind your veil.

But none of that changes a goddamn thing.

You still have to do the work.

Nobody is coming to save you. Nobody is going to walk your path for you. And the beautiful, terrifying truth? It's your life. It works if you work it. Do the fucking work.
