How Can I Breathe Better?

Yesterday I was running around the hill and I couldn't fucking breathe.

And I noticed where my attention immediately went:

I can't breathe.
I can't breathe.
I can't breathe.

Okay. That's true.

I'm not going to bullshit myself with “I can breathe! I can breathe!” while I'm gasping for air.

But I don't have to keep my attention on the limitation either.

So I changed the question:

How do I breathe better?

And immediately my attention changed.

Longer breath. Relax my body. Breathe through my nose. Slow down when I need to. Open my stride. Find a rhythm.

Nothing about the physical reality had magically changed.

But I changed what my nervous system was being asked to solve.

That's the difference between lying to yourself with positivity and deliberately directing your attention.

The limitation is real.

Acknowledge it.

Then use it to show you where you want to go.
